Equinox was a ‘green’ based project sponsored by Genesis Energy, Resene and Environchoice. The brief was to develop and design a 3D rapid prototyper in only 4weeks. Equinox utilises the natural energy of the sun in two ways; powering the machine through solar panels and focusing the UV rays with a magnifying glass onto a spinning billet in order to create forms. Its gyroscopic-type mechanics is calibrated to track the suns movement, whereby a magnifying lens would focus-dry thin layers of paint onto a rotating billet. The billet would articulate backwards and forwards, each time receiving a new coat of paint, resulting in a lot of thin layers. Within the centre of Equinox a number of motions occur. This includes rotisserie, sliding, painting and washing of the billet.
